SAVE THE DATE * 14 March 2017

  • What: “Transforming Education for a Vibrant Africa”
  • When:  14 March 2017  - 09.00-10.30
  • Where: Dakar, Senegal, at the side-lines of the ADEA Triennale on Education, CICAD, Room 205.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) recognizes that Education is a key engine to support Africa’s economic transformation, private sector development and job creation. Since 2005, the Bank approved more than 60 education projects amounting US$1.6 billion, benefitting 6 million youth throughout Africa.

Meanwhile, we observe that African countries are becoming increasingly aware of the lack of quality human capital which impact productivity and growth. In many countries, low quality of service delivery, and mismatch of skills with labor market needs weakens the employability of graduates and labor force productivity. Africa is the world’s youngest region, and will have the world’s largest workforce by 2040, surpassing China and India. This surplus of human capital will not be able to be absorbed in the public sectors only. African countries are also cognizant of the fact that youth need to have the skills to create their own businesses and incentives must be provided to facilitate enterprise creation. Building African-owned businesses will also enable countries to move up the value chain and transform their raw materials into competitive and tradable goods and services. In order to achieve this, African countries need to transform their education systems now, so that the next generation is prepared for future labor markets.

Mark your calendar to attend a side-event on “Transforming Education for a Vibrant Africa” and be part of the discussions on AfDB’s vision and actions in the Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) sectors and engage with AfDB for business development and future collaboration.
