Title: Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Education in Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, and Senegal

Storyline: The Center for Global Development (CGD)’s education program launched the Partnership for Research on Progress and Resilience in Education (PREPARE) aimed at producing rigorous evidence on the most important education challenges posed by COVID-19 and working with local policymakers to ensure that the answers are heard. CGD is keen to share the PRPARE experience based on initial work with partners in the African countries of Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, and Senegal, particularly on how they ensured children re-enrolled safely during COVID-19, determining what learning has been lost and how to reverse this, and understanding the potentially large differential impacts of the pandemic on girls and vulnerable groups.
Objective: Using data and evidence to help answer pressing education policy questions within the COVID-19 context based on the experience of the PREPARE initiative in African countries.
Expected outcome: As the real effects and impacts of the lockdowns and school closure on children are poorly documented, the PREPARE initiative will provide decision makers with high-quality data to use in the design and monitoring and evaluation of the policies that have been put in place.
